Vassilieff in Mildura

Mildura Arts Centre Collection

Danila Vassilieff was one of the most loved personalities in Australian art. The Russian-born Australian painter and sculptor’s presence and example were critical to the figurative and expressionist direction of Melbourne art in the 1940s.

His straightforward and practical approach to creating art helped challenge the traditional norms of the era, giving support to the modernists in the ongoing discussion between art and 'modern' art, and for this he has often been recognised as the pioneer of Australian modernism.

This exhibition showcases a selection of works created around the time he was living and teaching in Mildura and Swan Hill, which are a highlight of the Mildura Arts Centre Collection.
